Government Education Programs

Deaf and hard of hearing - school children
Students with hearing loss, as well as their parents and teachers, can make use of specialist support services and resources. These are available from the age of diagnosis to the end of high school.

Individual amplification devices, such as hearing aids are available through Hearing Australia until the age of 26.

Arranging support services
  1. Schools work with families to discuss concerns.
  2. The school consults with Student Support Services, fills in a referral form and gets parent or guardian consent.
  3. The local education office advises parents or guardians when they receive the referral.
  4. The nominated support service contacts the school to arrange the services needed.
  5. The school develops a learning plan with input from the student, their parents or guardians, allied health professionals and a special educator (hearing). This details the support required and the responsibilities of each party.

Schools for the deaf and hard of hearing

There is a range of services for children and students with hearing loss, including several schools with specialised programs for those with significant hearing loss.

Non-Government Education Programs

Pembroke School

Picture
The Hearing Unit comprises resource rooms on each of our two campuses where specialist teachers (holding qualifications in Deaf Education) support our hearing-impaired students. Specialist teaching, counselling and technical matters relating to hearing aids, cochlear implants and F.M. systems are attended to in the respective resource rooms.
All hearing-impaired students are enrolled as regular students and are members of a mainstream class. They follow the regular timetable as closely as possible and spend as much time as possible with that mainstream class. Enrolments range from Early Learning Centre through to Year 12. Each hearing-impaired student is provided with specialist support from Hearing Unit teachers as they progress through the School.

With the support of the specialist teachers, students with a hearing loss receive particular attention which seeks to further develop listening, speech, language, thinking and conversational skills and to enhance, reiterate and interpret regular classroom lessons using individual and small group tutoring and in-class support. The strong and varied co-curricular program at Pembroke allows the hearing-impaired students to participate on an equal basis with their hearing peers.

Can Do for Kids

We want children, young people and their families to live life focused on what they CAN do.

That’s why we formed in 1874: to provide support and services to children, young people and their families, who are blind, Deaf, have low vision, are hard of hearing, or have sensory needs. We work together to help them communicate better, connect easier, and live their best lives.

Can:Do 4Kids, Townsend House also incorporates the Cora Barclay Listening and Spoken Language Program.  Founded in 1945 and formerly known as the Cora Barclay Centre, it is Australia’s oldest listening and spoken language service for children who are deaf or hearing impaired.
