Inclusive Ed Expo 2022 - Presenters needed

19/1/2022

Hi everyone,

In 2021 AATD(SA) did their first presentation as part of the online Inclusive Education Expo coordinated by SERU. The topic was hearing loss amongst Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, unpacking current research and teaching strategies.
The concept was to develop a free, easily accessible resource, sharing the expertise of TODs in SA. Whilst it was a learning curve for those involved, it was also an excellent professional learning opportunity.

In 2022 AATD(SA) is looking to apply to submit another presentation. The topic will be “How do you get kids to listen?”
The presentation will highlight the need in schools and preschools to explicitly teach listening skills and listening behaviours to all children/students, including D/HH individuals.

The presentation will include recommendations/current research:
  • Introduction: Importance of developing listening skills/receptive language skills
  • Whole-class strategies to explicitly teach and improve listening
  • Whole class activities to practice listening skills
  • How to prepare the classroom environment for listening
  • Individual auditory skills training and intervention strategies

Info: Each presenter will speak/sign for 10-15 minutes, covering a segment. Meetings to prepare the presentation can occur online. The presentation recording is done face to face in Adelaide at SERU.

If you have knowledge of these topics and are interested in volunteering to be involved, please contact the AATD(SA) PD subcommittee by emailing [email protected] ([email protected])

Kind regards,

Ashlyn

How will the presentation address the unique challenges faced by D/HH students in developing listening skills, and what specific strategies will be recommended to support their auditory and language development in the classroom?
